You’re sitting on the sofa at 3 in the morning. Your baby is feeding, but somehow not quite right. It wriggles, keeps letting go, turns its head to the side, cries. You’re exhausted and wondering: am I doing something wrong? Let me reassure you: you’re not doing anything wrong. And neither is your baby. But there’s something that’s often overlooked and that I see in my practice almost every day.

The mouth is just the tip of the iceberg

When breastfeeding isn’t going smoothly, most people look at technique first. The latch is adjusted, a lactation consultant comes by, maybe a tongue tie is diagnosed. All of that makes sense, no question.

But sometimes the real cause lies elsewhere, in your baby’s body.

Birth is physically intense for a baby. The skull is compressed, the cervical vertebrae are rotated and stretched, the tissue adapts. That’s physiologically normal. But sometimes tensions remain in the tissue afterward: in the neck muscles, the jaw joint, the floor of the mouth, or the diaphragm. Tensions that don’t resolve on their own and that make themselves felt directly during breastfeeding.

One area I pay particular attention to is the side of the skull around the ear. This is exactly where tensions tend to accumulate through the molding process during birth. And it’s no coincidence: this is where the jaw muscles and neck muscles attach. Both structures that play a central role in sucking and swallowing.

What I see in my practice

When a baby always wants to feed on the same side, turns its head, clamps down, or can barely build up suction. That’s body language.

I then look at: how mobile is the neck? How free is the jaw joint? How relaxed is the floor of the mouth, the area so crucial for rhythmic sucking? Is the diaphragm free, so the baby can actually breathe comfortably while feeding?

Because breastfeeding is coordinated high-performance work for a newborn: sucking, swallowing, breathing. All at once, in rhythm, many times per hour. If there’s a blockage anywhere in the system, the rhythm breaks down.

Through my training in dentosophy, I’ve developed an additional, very precise perspective on exactly these connections. Dentosophy places great emphasis on the quality of sucking and swallowing and on the question: how do the tongue, lips, and jaw work together? And how can you target the areas where the pattern isn’t quite right yet?

The most common signs to watch for

Not every bout of restlessness during feeding has a physical cause, but these signals are worth looking at more closely:

Your baby always turns its head to the same side and wants nothing to do with the other breast. This can be a sign of tension in the neck muscles, often from a preferred position during pregnancy or from traction during birth.

It keeps letting go of the breast and starting again, because the sucking motion is tiring. When the jaw joint or the floor of the mouth is tense, the baby fatigues quickly.

It frequently chokes or drinks very slowly. The timing between sucking and swallowing is slightly off, often connected to the mobility of the upper cervical vertebrae, which regulate the swallowing reflex.

It’s restless after feeding, even though it has fed. Perhaps because it swallowed air. When the lips can’t form a good seal, more air enters the stomach. This can cause stomach pain that has nothing to do with gas or intolerances..

What my work can do here

In my practice, I work very gently and I explain a lot. First, I examine your baby’s entire body: where did tensions build up during pregnancy and the birth process? What is still holding on? What needs an impulse to let go?

Thanks to my many years of experience as a complementary therapist, I can combine different techniques in a targeted way: osteopathic and craniosacral methods, reflexology, and dentosophy. This combination allows me to respond very individually to what your baby’s body needs right now. Not by following a fixed protocol, but tailored to the person in front of me.

You don’t just go home and wait. You also receive concrete homework: small techniques and observations you can apply yourself in everyday life.

What I can tell you is this: I have never had a mother leave without at least one “aha moment.” That feeling when it suddenly becomes clear, “Oh, so that’s why he always tensed up while feeding.” That is priceless.
