A healthy back starts early.
Our back stays with us throughout our entire life. Yet the foundation for a healthy spine is laid in the very first months of life. The way our posture develops. How we sit, stand, and move has a significant impact on the health of our back, from childhood all the way into adulthood.
Spinal development begins after birth
During pregnancy, the baby is curled up in a flexed position inside the womb. After birth, the body has to adapt to gravity for the very first time.
A newborn’s spine initially has only a single curve. The characteristic double-S shape of the spine only develops over the course of neurological and motor development. From around the third month of life, the baby begins lifting its head. This further develops the cervical spine and strengthens the back muscles. Sitting, crawling, standing, and walking follow later. Each developmental stage helps to straighten and stabilize the spine.
This is why movement, free play, and sufficient tummy time are essential building blocks for healthy development.

Humans: masters of upright posture
Humans are the only vertebrates with a fully balanced spine in the form of a double-S curve. This unique structure allows us to walk upright and use our hands freely.
At the same time, upright posture places high demands on the muscles, joints, and intervertebral discs. To keep the spine stable, it requires a good interplay between:
- Back muscles
- Abdominal muscles
- Pelvic floor
- Diaphragm
- Coordination and balance
When sitting becomes a burden
In modern society, many people spend a large part of their day sitting.
Prolonged sitting weakens the stabilizing muscles and encourages poor postural habits. The following pattern often develops:
- The head pushes forward.
- The shoulders collapse inward.
- The thoracic spine rounds.
- The pelvis tilts backward.
- The lumbar spine loses its natural curve.
This posture significantly increases the strain on the discs, joints, and muscles.
Why good posture is about more than just looking good
Good posture doesn’t just relieve pressure on the spine. It also improves:
- Breathing
- Blood circulation
- Digestion
- Mobility
- The body’s overall resilience
The diaphragm, in particular, can only work optimally when the rib cage and spine remain mobile.
Persistently poor posture, on the other hand, can contribute to tension, back pain, headaches, breathing difficulties, or even digestive issues..
Lumbago: when the back suddenly locks up
Many people experience what’s commonly called “lumbago” at least once in their life.
It typically presents as a sudden, sharp pain in the lower back, often triggered by:
- Prolonged sitting
- Lifting heavy loads
- An awkward movement
- Pre-existing muscle tension
Often, however, the real cause isn’t the movement itself, but rather a longer-standing overload or weakness in the stabilizing muscles. Lumbago is therefore often a warning sign from the body.
What helps during the acute phase?
- Heat Gentle movement
- Light stretching
- Relief without complete immobilization
- Manual treatments (osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, etc.)
- Medication support if needed, in consultation with a doctor
Herniated disc: when a disc becomes overloaded
Our intervertebral discs act like small shock absorbers between the vertebrae.
They can become damaged due to improper strain, lack of movement, prolonged sitting, accidents, or natural aging processes. In some cases, disc tissue protrudes outward and irritates the surrounding nerve structures.
Typical symptoms can include:
- Lower back pain
- Pain radiating into the leg
- Tingling or numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Limited mobility
Not every herniated disc causes symptoms, however.
Modern research shows that discs and the surrounding structures do have genuine potential for regeneration. It’s especially important not to fall back into old movement and postural patterns once symptoms have subsided.
My holistic approach
In my practice, I don’t look at back pain in isolation. Alongside the spine itself, posture, breathing, the pelvic floor, the diaphragm, stress levels, and individual movement patterns all play an important role.
Using osteopathic, craniosacral, reflexology-based, and dentosophic approaches, I help the body find its natural balance again and build greater long-term resilience.
I’ve had a particular interest in the development and treatment of disc problems for many years. As part of my master’s studies, I wrote my thesis on the underlying mechanisms behind herniated discs. This in-depth research gave me valuable insight into the complex relationships between posture, movement, strain, tissue healing, and degeneration, knowledge that continues to inform my therapeutic work today.
Because a healthy back isn’t the result of a single treatment, but rather the interplay of movement, posture, stability, regeneration, and self-regulation.
