Self-healing powers: How to activate your “inner doctor”.
In an article in GEO, the physician Prof. Dr. Tobias Esch explains how every person has great self-healing powers and how these can be strengthened – and why stress is a dangerous opponent. In this blog article, I summarize the most important points:
What is self-healing?
Self-healing is the body’s ability to overcome illnesses and become healthy again. This has nothing to do with esotericism. A simple example: A wound that closes by itself is a typical form of self-healing. However, certain circumstances, such as invading germs or stress, can hinder this healing. Other factors, however, such as immobilization of the injury or good sleep, can accelerate it.
The role of the doctor and self-healing powers
Healing is based on three pillars: Firstly, on what the doctor does with the patient, from diagnosis to x-rays to surgery. Secondly, on what the patient receives from the doctor, such as medication, therapies or aids. And thirdly, on the patient’s self-healing power. A doctor should therefore take a holistic view of the patient’s circumstances in order to support and promote self-healing powers.
The “inner doctor” and the connection between mind and body
The term “inner doctor” refers to the close interdependence between mind and body. Mental factors have a considerable influence on health. Good medicine therefore focuses on the patient and their resources and awakens the conviction that they themselves can do a lot of good for their health.
Four remedies to strengthen self-healing powers:
Exercise: Sport activates the reward system in the brain, reduces anxiety and stress, lowers blood pressure and slows down inflammatory processes.
Healthy diet: A balanced diet supports the immune system and promotes general health.
Stress reduction: Excessive stress is the greatest saboteur of self-healing powers. Stress management techniques are therefore essential.
Regular relaxation: methods such as craniosacral therapy help to calm the body and cope better with mental stress.
The influence of lifestyle on diseases
It is known that more than 80 percent of all type 2 diabetes is related to lifestyle. A healthy diet, regular exercise, avoiding stress and relaxation can significantly alleviate the symptoms – in some cases it is even possible to cure them. This also applies to other diseases of civilization such as cardiovascular diseases, many pain conditions, gastrointestinal disorders or thyroid problems.
Stress as an opponent of self-healing
Stress is an evolutionary reaction to life-threatening situations. Nowadays, however, we often experience psychosocial stress in the office or in the family, which quickly becomes a permanent burden. The body is then in a long-term state of emergency and complete regeneration hardly takes place.
