How does stress affect the vagus nerve?
Do you know that feeling when, after a long, stressful day, you just can’t switch off? You’re lying in bed, your body is exhausted, but your mind keeps racing. Your stomach is tense, sleep won’t come, and somehow you feel irritable even though you can’t quite say why. That’s your nervous system at work, and right at the center of it: the vagus nerve.
What the vagus nerve actually does
The vagus nerve is one of the longest nerves in the body. It starts in the brainstem, runs down through the neck, passes by the heart, through the diaphragm, and into the abdomen, supplying nearly all the internal organs along the way: heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, liver. It’s the main driver of the parasympathetic nervous system. The system responsible for putting your body into rest mode. Lowering heart rate. Stimulating digestion. Strengthening the immune system. Regulating inflammation.

In short: when the vagus nerve is functioning well, your body recovers. When it’s under pressure, the body stays stuck in alarm mode, even long after the actual danger has passed.
The effect of chronic stress on the vagus nerve
Our nervous system wasn’t built for constant stress. It’s designed for short-term threats: alarm, then recovery. But what happens when the alarm never switches off?
The vagus nerve loses its ability to regulate. The body stays stuck in fight-or-flight mode, day after day, sometimes for years. And this leaves its mark: blood pressure that stays chronically elevated. A digestive system that never settles. An immune system that’s either overreacting or exhausted. Sleep that doesn’t restore you. Anxiety that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause. Mood swings that don’t match what’s actually happening in your life.
I see this regularly in my practice: people who “have everything,” and yet still can’t find calm. Whose bodies simply can’t downshift anymore.
Where the vagus nerve and complementary therapy meet
The vagus nerve exits the brain through a narrow opening at the base of the skull, right next to the occipital bone (os occipitale). Tension in this area — in the membranes, the joints, the surrounding tissue — can directly impair how well the vagus nerve functions..
This is exactly where craniosacral therapy comes in. Using gentle, targeted impulses, I work on the base of the skull, the sacrum, and the membranes connecting them; the craniosacral system. The goal: to release tension and give the nervous system room to step out of alarm mode.
What I see again and again: the body knows how to recover. Sometimes it just needs the right impulse, and permission to let go.
What can change
When the vagus nerve is able to work more freely again, the whole body shows it. Sleep becomes deeper. Digestion calms down. The mind feels clearer. That constant feeling of being on edge starts to fade. Some clients describe it simply as: “I finally feel like myself again.”
This doesn’t always happen after just one treatment. A nervous system that has been in alarm mode for years sometimes needs a bit of time and patience. But the direction is clear, away from stress, toward the body’s natural capacity to regulate itself.
